Temperature & Climate: Indian River County is located at the northern border of Florida's warmest thermal belt. Yearly rainfall in 2000 was 47 inches. September is usually known as the rainy month, with June, October and August following next in order. The period of least rainfall usually occurs from November to April. The average year round temperature is 82°, summer 89°, winter 74.3°.

Hospitals: Indian River Memorial Hospital, 1000-36th Street, Vero Beach, is a 335 bed, all-private room, full service community hospital with medical, surgical, maternity, pediatric, rehabilitation, cancer center, and emergency services. Sebastian River Medical Center is a 129 bed, acute care facility with medical-surgical staff, and is located at 13695 US #1, Sebastian, in the northern part of Indian River County. Psychiatric Institute of Vero is an inpatient psychiatric facility located at 1190-37th Street. HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital is a 9- bed facility and is located at 1600-37th Street. The Sunshine Rehabilitation Center offers physical therapy to handicapped children and adults. The Florida Eye Institute, 2750 Indian River Boulevard, Vero Beach, 569-9500.

Government: The County is governed by a commission of five, elected county wide. but residing in the five districts in the county. The city of Vero Beach is under the Council Manager form of government. Councilmen serve two-year terms.

Police Dept.: The City of Vero Beach has an active police force consisting of 63 sworn officers and 27 civilians.

Sheriff’s Dept.: The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office has a staff of 433, including sworn law enforcement officers and civilians.

Fire Protection: Indian River County has a Unified Fire District with 11 fire stations throughout the county.

Municipal Facilities: The City owns and operates its own water, sewer and electrical generation and distribution facilities.

Libraries: The County has two full service libraries. The Indian River County Main Library is located at 1600 21st Street, (772) 770-5060. The North County Library is at 1001 Fellesmere Road, Sebastian, (772) 589-1355.

Local Newspaper: The Press Journal is published daily and may be obtained by writing P.O. Box 1268, Vero Beach, FL 32961, by phone (772) 562-2315. The Sebastian Sun(772) 589-4566 is published weekly. Florida Today (772) 562-1771 is published daily. Hometown News (772) 569-6762 is published weekly and can be obtained by writing 1020 Old Dixie Hwy, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Military Facilities: The nearest veterans’ hospital is in West Palm Beach (800) 972-8262 with others in Miami and Tampa. The nearest military base, Patrick Air Force Base, is 50 miles north at Cocoa Beach. Veterans Services, Vero Beach (772) 567-8000 ext. 499. Airports: Melbourne International Airport, 35 miles north. Other international airports are located in Orlando, Palm Beach and Miami-all within a one to two hour drive.

Public Transportation: Community Coach fixed route bus service is available weekdays throughout the entire county FREE to all age groups. Complete schedules are available by calling 569-0903. $1.00 each way or for shopping. Greyhound service also available with a depot at Melbourne International Airport (800-231-2222).
